NEMA orders dumpsite relocation

The National Environment Management Authority now wants the Embu dumpsite moved thirteen kilometres away from an airstrip. Speaking during a clean-up exercise held on Thursday at Embu town, Embu County Director of environment Mohammud Hashir Ali said the dumpsite need to be relocated as it will pose a danger to planes when the airstrip becomes operational. “Environmental laws stipulate that a town’s dumpsite be located more than 13 kilometres away from an airstrip to prevent accidents caused by planes hitting birds that feed at the dumpsite”, Ali said.

Ali however urged Embu Governor Martin Wambora to find alternative land to relocate the dumpsite, which borders the airstrip. In matters concerning garbage collection, Ali asked the county government to use the trucks stipulated by law for garbage collection. He said garbage trucks should be enclosed to prevent air pollution. The Clean-up exercise was organised by NEMA. NEMA website
